How much does a website cost? It is one of the questions we get most often — and the honest answer is "it depends." But instead of leaving it at that, we give you a concrete overview of what you can realistically expect to pay for different types of solutions in 2026.
The price of a website ranges from zero (if you build it yourself in Wix) to hundreds of thousands of DKK for a complex custom web app. The most important thing is to understand what you are actually paying for — and what it costs you to choose the cheap option if it does not perform.
We build websites and webshops for businesses in Aarhus and across Denmark. The figures below are based on our own experience with the Danish market in 2026 as well as ongoing conversations with prospective clients about what they have actually been quoted.
1. The four types of websites
Before we talk prices, it is important to understand that not all websites are created equal. What you need depends entirely on your business and your goals — and that largely determines what you should budget for.
Most SMEs need either a brochure site or a webshop. Custom web apps are a different category — they are effectively software development, and the price reflects that complexity.
2. Typical prices in Denmark 2026
Here is a realistic overview of what you can expect to pay on the Danish market. Note that the ranges are broad — the price depends heavily on the agency, region, complexity and which features you need.
| Cost type | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Simple brochure site (5 pages) | 8,000–15,000 DKK |
| Brochure site with CMS | 15,000–25,000 DKK |
| Webshop (Shopify) | 15,000–40,000 DKK |
| Webshop (WooCommerce) | 20,000–50,000 DKK |
| Custom webshop | 40,000–80,000 DKK |
| Hosting per year | 500–3,000 DKK |
| Domain per year | 50–150 DKK |
| SSL certificate | 0 DKK (included in hosting) |
| Maintenance per month | 500–2,000 DKK |
Remember that these prices are for the website itself — they do not include ongoing Google Ads, Facebook advertising or SEO. A website that never generates traffic is not worth much, regardless of what it cost to build.
3. What affects the price?
Within the same category, two quotes can vary by a factor of two. Here are the most important factors that determine what your website will ultimately cost:
Number of pages and complexity
A simple 5-page brochure site is far cheaper than a 30-page site with multiple subsections, filterable product catalogues and a careers portal. The more pages and the more unique logic on each page, the more hours it costs.
Design: template vs. custom
Building on a pre-made template (for example a Shopify theme for 300 DKK or a WordPress theme for 500 DKK) is significantly cheaper than designing everything from scratch. Custom design gives you a unique look that stands apart from competitors, but the price is higher because the design process takes considerably more time.
Functionality and integrations
Payment gateway, booking system, member login, search functionality, live chat, newsletter integration, ERP synchronisation — each additional feature costs hours. Think carefully about what you actually need on day one, and what can wait until version 2.
Content production
Many quotes do not include copy, images or video. Professional copywriting typically costs 500–1,500 DKK per page. Professional photography costs 3,000–10,000 DKK for a day. Expect content production to potentially double the budget if you do not have the material ready yourself.
SEO optimisation
Technical SEO — semantic HTML, structured data, Core Web Vitals, meta tags, internal link structure — should be included in all professional solutions. More advanced SEO such as keyword research, content strategy and link building is a separate collaboration on top of the website.
Responsive design and accessibility
In 2026, mobile optimisation is not an optional extra — it is a requirement. A professional agency always includes it. Do however check that the quote explicitly mentions mobile adaptation and accessibility (WCAG 2.1).
4. WordPress vs. Shopify vs. Custom
The choice of platform is one of the most important decisions you make — it determines everything from what your site can do to what it costs to maintain. Here is an honest overview:
| Parameter | WordPress | Shopify | Custom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | Blog, brochure | Webshop | Unique solutions |
| Starting price | From 10,000 DKK | From 15,000 DKK | From 25,000 DKK |
| Monthly running cost | 100–500 DKK | 300–2,000 DKK | Variable |
| Scalability | Medium | High | Unlimited |
| Security | Requires maintenance | Included | Depends on setup |
| Speed | Medium | Fast | Fully optimisable |
| SEO | Good (with plugins) | Good | Perfect (full control) |
WordPress is the most widely used CMS in the world and gives you enormous flexibility. The downside is that you are responsible for security updates and plugin compatibility. An outdated WordPress site is a hacked WordPress site — it is only a matter of time.
Shopify is the dominant platform for e-commerce, and for good reason: hosting, security and updates are Shopify's responsibility. You pay a monthly subscription fee (from approx. 300 DKK) plus potentially for apps. It is more expensive to run than WordPress but far more hassle-free.
Custom solutions give you full control and no limitations — but they require competent developers to maintain them. We build our own sites as static HTML/CSS/JS pages hosted on Caddy, which delivers extreme speed and minimal maintenance overhead.
5. Hidden costs — what quotes rarely include
The cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest in the long run. Here are the costs many people do not think about before they sign:
Hosting and domain
Hosting costs 500–3,000 DKK per year depending on traffic and platform. A .dk domain costs 50–150 DKK per year. An SSL certificate is free with Let's Encrypt or Cloudflare and should always be included in a modern hosting solution.
Plugins and licences (WordPress)
WordPress itself is free — but the plugins that make it useful are not always. A serious WordPress site typically uses 5–15 premium plugins for SEO, security, forms, caching and backups. Budget for 1,000–5,000 DKK per year in plugin licences.
Shopify apps
Shopify's app store is fantastic, but apps cost money. Many popular apps for reviews, subscription products, advanced search or loyalty programmes together cost 500–3,000 DKK per month. Check the app budget before choosing Shopify as your platform.
Content production
Copy, images and videos are rarely included in a standard web development quote. An empty website with placeholder text helps neither your visitors nor Google. Budget separately for content production.
Maintenance and support
A website is not a one-off product — it is a living platform that requires updates, bug fixes and ongoing improvements. WordPress sites should be updated monthly. All sites may need technical support at some point. Either you buy a maintenance agreement (500–2,000 DKK/month) or you handle it yourself.
The most expensive website is the one that does not convert. A cheap template site that costs 5,000 DKK but never generates leads is more expensive than a professional site at 25,000 DKK that actually pays for itself. Always ask: "What is the expected return on this investment?" — not just "What is the cheapest option?"
SEO and marketing
A website without traffic is a digital business card nobody sees. If the goal is leads or sales, you need to think about traffic generation from day one — whether through organic SEO, Google Ads or social media. Set a realistic marketing budget on top of the website cost.
6. Agency vs. freelancer vs. DIY: which makes sense?
There are three routes to a new website — and they have very different price-to-quality profiles:
| Parameter | Agency | Freelancer | DIY (Wix/Squarespace) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price | 15,000–80,000+ DKK | 8,000–40,000 DKK | 0–5,000 DKK |
| Quality | High, consistent | Variable | Limited |
| Support | Included | Depends on agreement | Self-service |
| Timeline | 4–12 weeks | 2–8 weeks | 1–4 weeks |
| Scalability | High | Medium | Low |
| SEO | Professional | Variable | Limited |
When does an agency make sense? If your business turns over more than 50,000 DKK per month and your website is a critical part of your sales process, an agency is almost always the right investment. You get a consistent delivery, a professional result and a partner who can help you further with SEO and marketing.
When is a freelancer a good choice? If you have a budget of 8,000–40,000 DKK and are comfortable managing the project yourself, a skilled freelancer can deliver excellent results — especially if you have personal recommendations. Always check their portfolio and case studies, and make sure you have a clear contract.
When is DIY good enough? If you are a solo self-employed person who just needs an online presence to back up your business cards, and you are not dependent on being found on Google, Wix or Squarespace can work perfectly well. Just do not expect to rank organically in competitive search results with a standard Wix site.
